Police recover guns from 54 alleged robbers and kidnappers

Police recover guns from 54 alleged robbers and kidnappers , 54 people have been detained by the Nigeria Police Force in connection with crimes of kidnapping and armed robbery, among other offenses. Additionally, 92 guns of different calibers, 760 rounds of ammunition, 120 magazines, two IEDs (bombs), and counterfeit $970,000 have been found.

The Department of Force Intelligence’s Intelligence Response Team of the NPF is responsible for the arrests and recoveries, according to The PUNCH.

ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the Force Public Relations Officer, announced the development on Wednesday in Abuja at a news conference and suspect parade.

Adejobi stated, “The courageous agents of DFI-IRT and DFI-STS apprehended a total of 54 individuals, some of whom are already being prosecuted in court for the different offences in which they have been charged.

Ninety-two firearms, 760 live rounds, 14 exhibit cars, one forged document, 120 magazines, two IEDs, one suicide belt, and cash amounts of counterfeit currency totaling nine hundred and seventy thousand US dollars were also found and designated as exhibits for the prosecution of the different cases.

The Force PRO added that five main suspects in the abduction of Diego Tanner, a Swiss national, were among the detained suspects.

Nneka Okparaf, 33, from Ikeduru LGA in Imo State; Emu Larry Chidiebere, 34, from Ika North East LGA in Delta State; Babatunde Femi, 30, originally from Owode Obafemi LGA in Ogun State; Williams Banjo Omotayo, 28, from Epe LGA, Lagos State; and Samuel Balogun, 22, from Isale-Oja LGA in Oyo State are among the suspects, according to the police.

“This regrettable episode happened on May 30, 2023, when Mr. Tanner was kidnapped and then freed following the payment of a 2000 euro ransom. Using the Nigeria Police Force’s ICT apparatus, the committed IRT operatives worked nonstop to apprehend criminals and apprehended all five of the main suspects in this kidnapping case.

The Force PRO said, “This operation not only resulted in the suspects’ apprehension but also in the recovery of critical evidence, including one assault rifle, two locally manufactured single-barrel long guns, and an empty magazine.”
