Meet Yemi Cardoso, new named governor of CBN. Dr. Olayemi Michael Cardoso’s nomination as the new governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria for a term of five years at the outset was approved by President Bola Tinubu on Friday, pending the Senate’s confirmation.

    In addition, Tinubu gave his approval to the nomination of four new Deputy Governors of the top bank, who will serve for a term of five years initially, pending Senate confirmation.

    They are Dr. Bala M. Bello, Mrs. Emem Usoro, Mr. Muhammad Dattijo, and Mr. Philip Ikeazor.

    Olayemi Cardoso, a native of Lagos, was raised there and received his basic and secondary education at Corona School Ikoyi and St. Gregory’s College, both in Lagos.
    His father, Felix Bankole Cardoso, was the first native Accountant-General of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in 1963 and, shortly after joining the bank in 1972, the first native Vice Chairman and Managing Director of Barclays Bank of Nigeria. Under his direction, Barclays successfully underwent a transformation to become a fully owned Nigerian company called Union Bank of Nigeria.

    In 1980, Yemi Cardoso graduated from Aston University with a Bachelor of Managerial and Administrative Studies, completing his undergraduate studies.
    Later, as a Mason Fellow, he continued his education at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government, where he received a Master’s degree in Public Administration in 2005.
    Cardoso received a Doctorate in Business Administration (DBA) (honoris causa) from Aston University in 2017 in honor of his excellent accomplishments in the business and public sectors. As a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Stockbrokers, he has additional respect.

    His positions as Commissioner in the Lagos State Ministry of Economic Planning and Budget, Board Chairman of the African Venture Philanthropy Alliance, and, most recently, Chairman of Citibank Nigeria Ltd for 12 years until his departure in 2022, are among his most significant accomplishments.
    Cardoso is a devoted husband and father. He is married and has three grandchildren in addition to five children. His parents were from well-known families in Popo Aguda and were descended from Brazilian returnees.
