The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has announced its intention to engage in negotiations for a new minimum wage, suggesting figures of either N100,000 or N200,000 due to the escalating cost of living. Ajaero, the President of NLC, emphasized that the recently proposed N35,000 wage by the government is not the new minimum wage, and discussions in March or April may lead to a new wage ranging from N100,000 to N200,000.

He clarified that the N35,000 wage is not an addition to the existing minimum wage of N30,000 and stressed that various factors, including inflation and the cost of living, would influence the determination of a new minimum wage. Ajaero asserted the need for a realistic amount in the negotiations, highlighting that asking for N65,000 would not be sufficient as it falls below the minimum wage when converted to dollars.
Highlighting the legislative aspect, he emphasized that for a new minimum wage to become effective, it must go through the legislative process in the National Assembly. Ajaero underscored the importance of enshrining the negotiated figure into law to ensure its legal standing as the minimum wage in the country.
