Jos DisCo, The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) have taken a decisive stand against the recent electricity price increase by sealing off the offices of key players in the power sector. In Bauchi, the premises of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), and Jos Electricity Distribution Company (JEDCo) have been closed down by union officials.

This move underscores the widespread discontentment among the populace regarding the surge in electricity tariffs. By shutting down these offices, the NLC and TUC are sending a clear message to both the government and power sector stakeholders about the urgent need to address the grievances of the people. It reflects a concerted effort by labor unions to assert the rights and interests of the citizens in the face of economic challenges.

This development is likely to prompt dialogue and negotiation between the concerned parties to find a resolution that balances the need for affordable electricity with the sustainability of the power sector. Ultimately, the goal is to ensure that the concerns of the public are acknowledged and addressed in a constructive manner.

    Jos DisCo

Jos Electricity Distribution (JED Plc) is among the eleven Electricity Distribution Companies (DisCos) privatized by the Nigerian Federal Government under the Power Sector Reform Act of 2005. This initiative resulted in the unbundling of the government-owned Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN). JED Plc operates as a public liability company, playing a crucial role in the distribution of electricity across Nigeria.

The recent events transpired due to the alleged non-compliance with letters sent to electricity operators and regulators, urging them to decrease electricity expenses and implement pricing bands for consumers in the state.

The leadership and members of the two unions congregated at the main entrance of the Jos Electricity Distribution Company’s headquarters, sealing the gate and preventing entry of staff and visitors.

They subsequently proceeded to the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) and Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) offices in various locations across Bauchi, ensuring their closure.

During the peaceful demonstration, union members wielded placards bearing messages such as “NLC/TUC Rejects Exploitation,” “Equal Power Distribution for All,” and “Opposition to Tiered Pricing.”

Addressing the gathering, Bauchi State NLC Chairperson, Comrade Dauda Shuaibu, highlighted that the union’s leadership had convened in Abuja on April 30 and issued letters to electricity distribution companies (DISCOs) demanding an immediate reversal of the new tariff.

He emphasized the resolve to halt operations at the JEDC office in Yelwa, alleging unauthorized unit sales and remittances. Shuaibu stressed the determination to sustain the protest until the electricity tariff hike was rescinded.

“We’re all aware of the hardships Nigerians are enduring. Despite the price hike, adequate electricity supply remains elusive. Hence, we demand an immediate reversal from the Federal Government. Should they fail to act, we’ll proceed with shutting down the entire electricity supply network nationwide,” he asserted.
