The Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs has announced that France wholeheartedly backs ECOWAS’s endeavors to thwart the coup attempt and reinstate President Bazoum for the sake of Niger’s future and the stability of the entire region. This statement was made by Mrs. Catherine Colonna, the Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, during her meeting with the Prime Minister of the Republic of Niger, Mr. Ouhoumoudou Mahamadou, at the Quai d’Orsay on August 5, 2023. Also present during the meeting was the Ambassador of Niger to France, Mrs. Aichatou Boulama Kane.

Mrs. Colonna emphasized that ECOWAS has granted the putschists a seven-day ultimatum to abandon their coup attempt, and France reiterates its unwavering support for President Bazoum and his government, who were democratically elected by the people of Niger and are the legitimate authorities in the country.
France firmly stands behind ECOWAS’s efforts to thwart the coup and restore stability to the region. The deadline given to the putschists will expire on Sunday, August 6. In light of this, France urges those responsible for the coup attempt to release President Bazoum and all members of his government promptly and allow the immediate return to constitutional and democratic order.
