In the early hours of Wednesday, heavily armed security operatives in Owerri picked up NLC President Joe Ajaero from the Congress State Council Secretariat and transported him to an undisclosed location.
Expressing their condemnation in a joint statement, the general-secretaries of NLC and TUC, Emmanuel Ugboaja and Nuhu Toro respectively, deplored the governor’s role in transforming the state into a haven for thugs and violence.
“The President and Commander in Chief of the Armed forces must intervene and call Hope Uzodimma to order to prevent the alarming transformation of the state into a breeding ground for thugs and violence,” they asserted.
The unions declared their determination to persist until the government addresses the workers’ demands.
“We will continue our engagement as trade unions until the Government heeds the demands of the workers.
“The Governor should not be under any illusion that the recent violence will deter our commitment to safeguarding the workers of Imo state.
On the contrary, it has only fueled our determination to organize more effectively and creatively to engage with him,” the unions emphasized.
Furthermore, the unions deemed the arrest and detention of Mr. Ajaero as unacceptable.
