Most people are unaware that skirts are the second-oldest style of apparel in the world’s history. Skirts are commonly associated with women’s clothes nowadays, yet they were once considered unisex apparel, and males wore them with pride. Even now, they remain an important component of the traditional dress of many tribes throughout the world.
1. Fiji — Sulu
A sulu, which is comparable to a kilt, has been worn by both men and women in Fiji since their colonization in the eighteenth century. The word “sulu” literally means “clothing” in the iTaukei language, and it was introduced by missionaries from Tonga. It’s composed of a rectangle-shaped piece of material and comes in a variety of lengths, including below-the-knee and ankle-length. It’s wrapped around the hips using a waist tie or an elastic band.
