The World Bank has granted a fresh loan of $700 million to Nigeria, with the primary purpose of supporting education and empowerment initiatives for adolescent girls in the country.

This additional funding is intended to provide further financial resources to bolster the ongoing Adolescent Girls Initiative for Learning and Empowerment program. The initiative is designed to enhance secondary education opportunities for girls in specific states.
The loan’s objectives include expanding project activities from the current seven states to an additional eleven states, thereby increasing the program’s reach. It also aims to extend support to a broader range of beneficiaries, including out-of-school girls, those who are married, and those with disabilities.
Nigeria faces the challenge of a significant number of out-of-school children, estimated at between 12 million and 15 million within the school-age group. This issue is particularly concentrated in northern Nigeria.
