UNILAG lowers fees Following a marathon discussion with NANS. The management of the University of Lagos, UNILAG, has agreed to a reduction in the mandatory fees that students enrolled in the institution must pay after a lengthy meeting with the national leadership of the National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS.
The National President of NANS, Comrade Usman Umar Barambu, attended the meeting together with other NANS leaders, according to a statement released on Friday morning by the Head of UNILAG’s Communication Unit, Adejoke Alaga-Ibraheem. The university team was led by Vice Chancellor Prof. Folasade Ogunsola.

“The meeting decided to lower the utility fees for all student categories from N20,000 to N15,000.00. For courses without a lab or studio, the required fees for new undergraduates were reduced from N126,325:00 to N116,325:00, and from N176,325:00 to N166,325:00.
The mandatory tuition for returning undergraduates was reduced from N100,750:00 to N80,750:00 for courses without labs or studios, from N140,250:00 to N120,250:00 for courses with labs or studios, and from N190,250:00 to N170,250:00 for students in the medical, pharmacy, and health professions.
“The Convocation Fee that all final-year students must pay was decreased from N30,000 to N27,000.00. Following is a review of hostel fees: The cost of the undergraduate hostels on the Akoka and Yaba campuses was cut from N90,000:00 to N43, 000:00. The cost of the dorms on the Idi-Araba campus was cut from N120,000 to N65,000.00. Sodeinde Hall’s fees were lowered from N250,000 to N135,000.
Comrade Barambu noted that the lack of Students Union Government (SUG) in UNILAG had a negative impact on student-management dialogue. Additionally, he mentioned that students might properly direct their complaints through their SUG.
Professor Ogunsola detailed the University’s precarious status in light of the current economic climate and the challenge it faces in order to fulfill its duties to, among others, its staff, students, and municipal service providers.
She reaffirmed the university’s commitment to putting measures in place to lessen the effects of the mandatory fee review into action.
Instalment payment options, the revitalization of the work-study program, financial aid for needy students, the Triple A Project, the Pay for Mentors Project, and scholarship opportunities are only a few of these measures.
Furthermore, the Vice-Chancellor reaffirmed that “No UNILAG student would leave the institution for financial reasons.” She emphasized that the university’s mission was to provide its students with a great education regardless of their class, tribe, or religious beliefs.
The VC will start the procedure as soon as feasible to resume student union operations at the university.
The institution has banned student unions for more than six years.
Recall that the institution’s students have been protesting the new fee structure since last week, which they have called prohibitive.
