Osimhen and Oshoala Receive Ballon d’Or nominations for 2023.Victor Osimhen, a forward for Nigeria, is one of the few athletes from his nation to be nominated for the 2023 Ballon d’Or award.

    Last season, the Napoli striker was in fantastic shape and helped the Italian team win their first Scudetto in 33 years.

    For the first time in 24 years, a Nigerian has been nominated for the award. Last to accomplish that accomplishment was Kanu Nwankwo.

    His candidacy was verified by the award’s sponsors, French Football, on Wednesday night.

    Osimhen won the award for the Best Striker in Serie A last season after outscoring Rafael Leao of AC Milan and Lautaro Martinez of Inter Milan with 25 league goals each.

    He also played a key role in the Super Eagles securing a spot in the postponed 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) and helping the team advance to the quarterfinals of the UEFA Champions League.

    The 24-year-old player became the first African to lead the Serie A scorers’ table as a result of his accomplishment.

    With the accomplishment, he also surpassed George Weah’s record for the most goals scored by an African in the Italian league.

    Asisat Oshoala, a fellow countryman, has already been named as one of the contenders for the award’s women’s category. The Barcelona Femeni star, who made history last year as the first African to make the list, has now achieved two consecutive victories.

    The former Arsenal player achieved a remarkable treble by winning the Champions League, the Supercopa de Espana Femenina, and the Primera Division championship.

    She, who is 28 years old, tied for the most goals scored in Spain with 21 in the domestic league. After her heroics, she played for the Super Falcons in the round of 16 at the recently finished Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.
