Senator Ahmed Wadada Aliyu, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Public Accounts, has sent a letter to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, urging him to appoint a substantive Auditor General for the Federation in accordance with Section 86 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).
Wadada expressed his concern about the potential risks arising from the absence of the Auditor-General for the Federation, including possible mismanagement, a lack of accountability, and transparency within the government. He highlighted that the country’s apex audit institution, the Office of the Auditor-General for the Federation, has been without a substantive Auditor-General for the past 10 months.

The Senator emphasized that this vacancy could affect the adherence to accounting standards and hinder the transmission of annual reports of government Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) to the parliament, which is essential for the effective functioning of National Assembly committees responsible for Public Accounts.
In the interest of the country, Wadada called on President Tinubu to heed his advice, as the absence of the Auditor-General might impact the government’s efforts in combating corruption and promoting transparency and accountability in governance. He emphasized that appointing a substantive auditor general would demonstrate the Federal Government’s commitment to fiscal responsibility and help maintain public trust.
Additionally, Wadada pointed out that the Audit Reports of 2020, 2021, and 2022 have not been transmitted to the National Assembly, as required by Section 85 (2) of the 1999 Constitution, due to the non-appointment of an Auditor General.
