Report on the meeting between the National Labor Congress and the Trades Union Congress
On Sunday, October 1, 2023, the Federal Government met with the leadership of the Nigeria labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) to discuss ways to resolve the disagreement that resulted from the elimination of the subsidy on Premium Motor Spirit (PMS).

The following was noted by the parties:
i) The Federal Government announced N25,000 solely as a provisional pay increase for all federal government employees who are paid by the Treasury for a period of six months.
ii) To alleviate public transportation issues brought on by the loss of PMS subsidies, the Federal Government is committed to moving quickly to provide Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses.
iii) The Federal Government pledges to offer money to micro and small businesses.
iv) For the following six months, there will be no VAT on diesel.
v) From October 2023 through December 2023, the Federal Government will begin paying N75,000 to 15 million households at a rate of N25,000 each month.
RESOLUTIONS:
The following decisions were made as a result of the meeting’s discussions:
i) The problems in contention can only be settled while employees are at work and not on strike.
ii) Labor unions lobbied for larger wage awards, and the Federal Government Team committed to bringing President Bola Tinubu’s consideration to bear on their request.
iii) A subcommittee will be established to work out the specifics of implementing all proposals for government interventions to mitigate the impact of the elimination of gasoline subsidies.
iv) The National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) and the Road Transport Employees Association of Nigeria (RTEAN) dispute in Lagos State has to be resolved immediately.
v) The NLC and TUC will take the offers from the Federal Government into consideration with a view to postponing the strike in order to allow for more deliberations on the implementation of the aforementioned resolutions.
Virtually attending the meeting presided over by the Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, were Governors Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State and Chairman of the Nigeria Governors Forum, Abdulrazak Abdulrahman of Kwara State.
Additionally present were Wale Edun, Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mohammed Idris, Minister of Information and National Orientation, Simon Lalong, Minister of State for Labor, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, Abubakar Atiku Bagudu, Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Betta Edu, and Doris Uz, Minister of Industry, Trade, and Investment.
The NLC President, Joe Ajaero, the TUC Deputy President, Dr. Tommy Etim Okon, the NLC General Secretary, Emma Ugboaja, and the TUC General Secretary, Nuhu Toro were among the leaders of the labor delegation.
