Minister of Education issues warning to University lecturers on Sexual harassment..

    In the aftermath of the University of Calabar sex scandal involving the suspended Dean of the Faculty of Law, Prof. Cyril Ndifon, the Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, issued a stern warning to members of the academia and the university community regarding incidents of sexual harassment on campuses.

    Addressing the press at his office in Abuja, the minister emphasized the ministry’s commitment to decisively dealing with perpetrators of such acts. He received the report of the committee investigating the alleged sexual harassment by Ndifon during the press briefing.

    Prof. Mamman underscored that sexual harassment constitutes a serious criminal offense that demands decisive action whenever it occurs. He expressed the ministry’s determination to employ all available measures to combat this issue in institutions of higher learning, describing it as a cancerous menace that must be eradicated at all costs.

    The Minister reiterated his commitment to invoking legal measures to ensure adequate punishment for perpetrators, emphasizing that no one would be allowed to exploit vulnerable groups. He also announced plans to establish sexual offences units within the Ministry and all institutions of higher learning to effectively address this menace.

    In his words, “Sexual harassment is a serious criminal offence and must be dealt with decisively, when and whenever it occurs.” The Ministry, he affirmed, is fully committed to taking comprehensive actions to curb the alarming rise of sexual harassment in educational institutions.
