In Lagos, 93 unexploded bombs discovered
As part of the ongoing “Exercise Clean Sweep,” 93 unexploded bombs (ordnance) have been found at the Ikeja Military Cantonment in Lagos.
On Tuesday, October 10, 2023, the effort to clean up the site of the 2002 bombing at the cantonment was launched.
The Army stated that the bombs that were found were of different types and calibres.
During his first briefing on the exercise’s update yesterday, Colonel Abdulrazaq Kazeem, the Director of the Directorate of Explosives Search and Disposal, Nigeria Army Engineers, and Coordinator of EXERCISE CLEAN SWEEP, disclosed, among other things, that 93 unexploded ordnance have been recovered from the site thus far.
There have been multiple reports of the discovery of UXO fragments within and near the bomb blast vicinity, despite previous clearance and disposal procedures at the site, greatly to the detriment of the safety and security of the envirroment.
These ordinances will be moved to the range as soon as the amount of explosives in our holding area reaches its maximum limit. I’ll head to the range today if we reach the explosive limitations. Because it is measured in kilogrammes, we would not go over a kilogramm above the explosive limitations. We wouldn’t go above that bound. We haven’t reached the boundaries yet, even at 93,” he said again.
“For the safety of personnel as they have made adequate equipment available including demarcations and trained personnel to identify UXO before recovery from the site,” stated Lt Col Oluseyi Oladapo Bamikole, the protection Officer.
