GOC 7 Division Calls for United Effort to Tackle IED Threat in Borno State…
Brigadier General Abubakar Haruna, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 7 Division and Commander of Sector 1 Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK), has made a heartfelt plea for all key stakeholders in Maiduguri Metropolitan Council and nearby communities to team up with the military to fight against the menace of Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs).

During a one-day Counter Improvised Explosive Device awareness seminar held on Friday, July 19, 2024, at the Theatre Command Officers Mess in Maimalari Military Cantonment, Maiduguri, Brigadier General Haruna stressed the urgent need for everyone to work together. He pointed out that IEDs remain a favored weapon of insurgents and that innovative and comprehensive strategies are needed to combat this threat.
“This seminar is organized to place significant emphasis on addressing the threat posed by IEDs,” said Brigadier General Haruna, who was the Special Guest of Honour. “It is imperative that we leave no stone unturned and become more ingenious in defeating this menace. The seminar is necessary to reawaken the security consciousness of the public and deny the highly degraded terrorists the freedom of action as they resort to desperate measures, using Vehicle Bound Improvised Explosive Devices and Person Bound Improvised Explosive Devices on soft targets.”
He also emphasized that the efforts of the seminar participants would not only improve security in Maiduguri but also boost public confidence and trust. Brigadier General Haruna urged everyone present to engage in meaningful discussions, clear any doubts, and share their knowledge with others in their various organizations and unions.
Brigadier General Haruna praised Brigadier General Abdul-Razak Kazeem, Commander of the 47 Engineer Brigade, for organizing the seminar. He called it a crucial initiative at a critical time. Experts in the field presented various topics, including what IEDs are, how they are made and networked, how to recognize them, and the dangers of suicide bombings.
The seminar was attended by troops of the 7 Division, the Nigerian Police Force EOD Squadron, representatives from the Borno State Ministry of Reconstruction, Rehabilitation, and Resettlement, the National Union of Road Transport Workers, the Nigerian Automobile Technician Association, the Monday Market Union, the Tricycle and Motorcycle Owners Association, and local residents, as well as troops of Operation HADIN KAI.
The seminar underscored the importance of community involvement in fighting IEDs. Brigadier General Haruna’s call for collaboration highlighted the vital role that local stakeholders play in enhancing security and countering insurgent activities. The proactive approach of the military, combined with the engagement of various community groups, marks a strong and coordinated effort to tackle the IED threat in Maiduguri and surrounding areas.
As the seminar wrapped up, there was a renewed sense of determination among participants to share the knowledge they gained with their communities.
