The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) leader, President Tinubu, declared that the rule of law cannot be allowed to disappear in Africa.
Tinubu’s ‘Working Closely’ in the Gabon Coup With The African Union (AU) and Nigerian President Bola Tinubu are collaborating closely to decide the next course of action in Gabon, where the military has seized constitutional authority.
After President Ali Bongo Ondimba, whose family has ruled Gabon for fifty years, was proclaimed to have won a third term in a contested election, Gabonese military announced a coup on Wednesday.

The election results of Gabon were likewise canceled by the coup leaders, and President Ali Bongo and his family were placed under house arrest. President Tinubu, the current head of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), responded to the most recent coup in the French-speaking (Francophone) nation of Central Africa by saying that the rule of law must not be allowed to disappear in Africa. This latest coup comes more than a month after the bloodless coup in the Niger Republic of West Africa on July 26.
Ajuri Ngelale, President Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, stated that President Tinubu is closely monitoring events with “deep concern for the country’s social political stability and at the seeming autocratic contention apparently spreading across different regions of our beloved continent.”
“The President affirms that the rule of law and a faithful reliance on constitutional judgments and mechanisms for resolving electoral disputes must never at any time be allowed to disappear from our great continent,” he stated. “To this end, the President is working closely and continues to communicate with other Heads of State in the African Union towards a comprehensive consensus on the next steps forward with respect to how the power in Gabon will play out and how the continent will react to contagious autocracy we have seen spread across our continent,” the statement continued.
