There are clear indications that the increased frequency of airstrikes conducted by the Air Component of Operation Hadarin Daji in Northwest Nigeria has potentially prompted key figures among the terrorists operating in Katsina and Zamfara States to contemplate surrendering their weapons in order to initiate peace talks with the Federal Government. This surge in airstrikes seems to have coerced the terrorist leaders, who are now expressing a sense of fear and desperation. These leaders claim that the aerial attacks have been consistently targeting their lives, residences, and livestock.

An informed source, familiar with their grievances, disclosed that on July 15, 2023, Usman Kachallah, a prominent terrorist leader based in Katsina, convened a meeting with fellow militants near Gusami Village in Birnin Magaji Local Government Area. The objective of the meeting was to address the predicament they were facing. Notable terrorist figures present at the gathering included Abdullahi Danda, Alhaji Shingi, and Lauwali Dumbulu, among others. Allegedly, during this meeting, many of the key figures agreed to lay down their arms and pursue peace. Nonetheless, their concerns about ongoing aerial assaults persist, targeting their dwellings, lives, and livestock. Some even proposed enlisting the assistance of various ethnic associations and groups to mediate with the government on their behalf.

Similarly, a sense of frustration was echoed by Buda Dankarami, also known as Gwaska, a prominent terrorist leader in Zamfara. On July 28, 2023, he expressed his exasperation due to the consistent aerial bombardment of his hideouts located around Tsanu Forest in Birnin Tsaba District, Zurmi Local Government Area of Zamfara State. His vexation arises from the continuous elimination of his close associates, animals, and valuable possessions. He conveyed his apprehension that despite frequently changing his location, the military has been able to accurately pinpoint his hideouts. This reality has eroded his trust in those around him, leaving his life in jeopardy. Consequently, he has begun rallying fellow terrorists to explore avenues for engaging the government in a peaceful resolution.

Military insiders, however, have revealed that such overtures from these terrorists are not unprecedented, and past experiences have shown their unreliability. Nevertheless, it is acknowledged that the recent uptick in airstrikes, specifically targeting the terrorists and their infrastructure, has likely contributed to their current outcry. Additional security sources contend that the intensity of these aerial assaults should be maintained alongside ground operations to effectively eradicate the remaining pockets of terrorists. This, they believe, will ultimately compel the terrorists to capitulate, enabling the government to negotiate from a position of strength.
