President Bola Tinubu has officially informed the Nigerian Senate about the proposed military action and other sanctions intended to be taken by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) against the military officers who recently took control of the Niger Republic through a coup on July 26.
Following the coup, President Tinubu, leading the West African regional bloc, has been engaged in discussions regarding potential sanctions targeting the coup plotters. Despite President Tinubu’s efforts, the junta has shown resistance, and even a delegation sent by him yesterday failed to ease the situation.
The letter from President Tinubu to the Senate was read on the Senate floor by the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio.
The letter stated the following regarding the political situation in Niger:
“After the unfortunate political situation in the Niger Republic, which resulted in the overthrow of its President, ECOWAS, under my leadership, strongly condemned the entire coup and resolved to work towards the restoration of the democratically elected government.
“In an effort to restore peace, ECOWAS convened a meeting and issued a communique outlining the following measures:
The closure and monitoring of all land borders with the Niger Republic, along with the reactivation of border drilling exercises.
Cutting off electricity supply to the Niger Republic and mobilizing international support for the implementation of the provisions outlined in the ECOWAS communique.
Prevention of the operation of commercial and special flights to and from Niger Republic, as well as the blockade of goods in transit to Niger, particularly from Lagos and eastern seaports.”
