In the recently declared results by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Returning Officer, Abayomi Fasina, Senator Hope Uzodimma of the All Progressives Congress (APC) emerged victorious in Imo State. Uzodimma’s landslide victory saw him triumph in all 27 local councils, amassing a total of 540,308 votes. His closest contenders, Senator Samuel Anyanwu of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) secured 71,503 votes, and Senator Athan Achonu of the Labour Party (LP) garnered 64,081 votes.
However, Uzodimma’s win prompted objections from the PDP and LP candidates, both of whom are urging the cancellation of the election results.
Ododo wins in Kogi
“In Kogi, the APC gubernatorial candidate, Alhaji Usman Ododo, is poised for a decisive victory with 446,237 votes, consolidating his lead as the results from the last three remaining LGAs were announced last night. Having triumphed in 11 LGAs and secured 417,166 votes, Ododo outpaced his closest rival, Murtala Ajaka of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), who won in six LGAs with 208,503 votes. Senator Dino Melaye, the PDP standard-bearer, is yet to claim victory in any LGA and has accumulated 41,925 votes. Leke Abejide of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) secured one LGA.
The declared results encompass 18 of the state’s 21 LGAs, including Adavi, Ajaokuta, Ankpa, Bassa, Dekina, Idah, Ijumu, Kabba-Bunu, Kogi, Mopamuro, Ofu, Okehi, Okene, Olamaboro, Omala, Yagba East, and Yagba West. Only one ward’s results in Ogori Magongo LGA have been received and announced.
The 11 LGAs won by the APC candidate so far include Adavi, Ajaokuta, Bassa, Ijumu, Kabba-Bunu, Kogi, Mopamuro, Ogori Magongo, Okehi, Okene, and Yagba West.
While the SDP candidate secured victories in Ankpa, Idah, Dekina, Ofu, Olamaboro, and Omala LGAs, the ADC candidate claimed one LGA, Yagba East. Following the release of outstanding results from Ibaji, Lokoja, and Igalamela-Odolu LGAs, Ododo’s lead became insurmountable, surpassing Ajaka (239,052 votes), Melaye (46,237 votes), and Abejide (21,819 votes).
However, Melaye swiftly contested the results from three LGAs, including Okene and Okehi, among others.”
PDP continues to hold the advantage, securing victories in five Local Government Areas, while APC triumphs in one in Bayelsa.
In Bayelsa, Governor Douye Diri, vying for reelection under the PDP, appears on track for victory as he has secured wins in five out of the six LGAs announced by INEC. Meanwhile, Chief Timipre Sylva of the APC emerged victorious in one LGA, Nembe.
As reported by the State Returning Officer and Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology, Minna, Prof Farouk Kuta, the PDP emerged victorious in Sagbama, Ekeremor, Yenagoa, Kolokuma/Opokuma, and Ogbia LGAs. The PDP has currently accumulated 137,909 votes, surpassing the trailing APC with 73,503 votes.
However, the results for Brass and Southern Ijaw LGAs are pending, as INEC has postponed the announcement of the final two LGAs until 12 noon today. Mr. Wilfred Ifogah, the Head of the Department of Voter Education and Publicity at INEC, Bayelsa State, cited challenges in the collation process of some units and wards’ results in these two local government areas as the reason for the adjournment.
Yesterday, a demonstration unfolded at the INEC office, with Bayelsa-based civil society advocates, women’s groups, youth organizations, state and National Assembly members, and concerned citizens expressing their grievances. The protest was prompted by suspicions of manipulated election results from Nembe Bassambiri.
Commencing as early as 9 am, irate demonstrators obstructed the busy Swali Road location of INEC to prevent the acceptance of what they deemed concocted results from Nembe Bassambiri.
Mr. Dambo Biriyai, SAN, the Bayelsa State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, addressed journalists during the protest, asserting that no election had taken place in Nembe Bassambiri. He urged INEC REC in the state, Mr. Obo Effanga, and South-South Commissioner for INEC, May Agbamuche-Mbu, to uphold integrity by rejecting the alleged falsified results.
