Bauchi State is currently under significant strain following violent escalations during the #EndBadGovernance protests. Governor Bala Mohammed has imposed a 24-hour curfew in the Katagum Local Government Area, particularly affecting the town of Azare, to curb the chaos that erupted during the demonstrations.
The protests turned violent on Monday, leading to the destruction of public property, including parts of the Katagum Local Government Secretariat and several vehicles. Additionally, the home of former Deputy Governor Baba Tela was vandalized and looted. In response, Governor Mohammed announced the curfew to restore order and prevent further violence.
Governor Mohammed stated, “Due to the deteriorating situation in Azare and its environment, leading to the destruction of public property, stealing, and victimization, His Excellency, Senator Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed, the Executive Governor of Bauchi State, has approved the imposition of a 24-hour curfew in the Katagum Local Government Area to contain the situation”
Security Measures and Government Response
The governor has directed all security agencies to take immediate action to manage the situation and apprehend those responsible for the violence. Law-abiding citizens are urged to cooperate with security forces during this period. The governor emphasized that while the demands of the protesters are valid, the state will not tolerate the destruction of lives and properties.
“The curfew aims to protect innocent citizens, maintain law and order, and prevent further breakdowns,” Governor Mohammed noted, commending security personnel for their handling of the situation and urging collective efforts to prevent future incidents
The Bauchi State Police Command reported that 52 protesters were arrested last Friday for participating in violent activities. During the clashes, one police officer was injured. The police are focused on maintaining public order and have been active in quelling the unrest across the state
