The meeting that was held in Abuja today made ECOWAS impose sanctions on the Niger Republic, The meeting was chaired by the President of Nigeria who is also the head of ECOWAS. Reiterating its strong disapproval of the recent occurrence in Niger and insisting on its stand on strong disapproval of the coup that led to the overthrow of Muhammed Bazzoum`s democratic government.

    The Meeting held in Abuja saw the presence of all the presidents of the 15 member countries of the ECOWAS.

    The decision reached, was announced by President Bola Tinubu who is the head of the Summit held in Abuja today Sunday 30th of July, 2023.

    ECOWAS impose sanctions on Niger Republic

    The decision includes imposing Political, Military, And Economic sanctions on the Country Niger Republic.

    The decisions are as follows:

    The closure of land and air borders between ECOWAS countries and Niger, establishing a no-fly zone on all commercial flights to and from Niger and suspending all commercial and financial transactions between ECOWAS Member States and Niger.

    All assets of the Republic of Niger in ECOWAS Central Bank, Niger state enterprises, and parastatals in commercial banks will be frozen.

    Niger will also be suspended from all financial assistance and transactions with financial institutions within ECOWAS.

    Travel bans and asset freezes were imposed on the military officials involved in the coup attempt, as well as their family members and civilians who accept to participate in any institution or government established by these military officials.

    Also transpiring from the meeting is the warning that gives military leader junta in Niger Republic one week to restore Niger President, Mohamed Bazoum as the legitimate President of Niger Republic or face measures that might involve the use of force. Also the directive mandates all ECOWAS Chiefs of Defence Staff to meet and discuss immediately.
