NECO complains N5.5 billion state debt and retains i examination results
Some unnamed states owe the exam organization N5.5 billion, according to Prof. Dantani Wushishi, Registrar and Chief Executive of the National Examination Council.
This was disclosed by Wushishi on Tuesday when he revealed the results of the 2023 Senior School Certificate Examination, stating that 51% of the applicants had obtained five credits, which included English and Mathematics.

The registrar claims that because the states assumed responsibility for the registration of their destitute citizens who were due for the test, the debt was accrued between 2012 and 2023.
He urged the states to move quickly to settle the debt, announcing that the council will not make the results of the states that are in debt public until the debts had been paid off.
“We will not release the results of candidates from these states; it is the money we use to run the council. They should please pay up,” he said.
Wushishi pointed out that the states should “look inwards to review their education sector and look also at all sectors of the education” in response to some of their underwhelming results.
According to him, Abia State led all 36 states as well as Abuja in terms of performance, with Adamawa, Akwa Ibom, and Adamawa states following.
In 2023, 1,296,985 candidates took the SSCE. There were 616,398 male applicants and 580,587 female candidates.
